Because we know that good coffee can sometimes require more time than we have to brew it. Other times, we simply wake up far too late to get all of our coffee making needs in. Thankfully, programmable coffee makers exist for those of us who find ourselves lacking the time and energy in the morning or who simply want a hot, fresh brew waiting for us when we get back in the evening from another day in the salt mines. The best programmable coffee makers have a whole host of features that make them highly desirable products. From time settings to brew temperature, these coffee makers take much of the guesswork out of the coffee brewing process and are truly a highlight of the modern coffee-making age. While there are more of these on the market than you can shake a bag of fresh grounds at, the truth is some of them are not that well made—or exciting (or that look go in your kitchen). We’ve looked into which machines are currently available, allowing us to give you a much whittled-down list of the 5 best programmable coffee makers you’ll find.

#1 – Best Programmable Coffee Maker: Cuisinart DCC-2650 Brew Central 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker

Cuisinart is well known for its wide range of kitchen appliances and knick knacks. The brewing powerhouse continues its reign of your countertop with the Cuisinart DCC-2650 Brew Central, the best programmable coffee maker on our list. This 12-cup, fully programmable coffeemaker was designed for the busy individual who wants their coffee and wants it fast (like before they even wake up lickety-split fast!).

The Cuisinart DCC-2650 Brew Central (read full review) has a fairly slim profile, although it’s rather tall to fit the larger glass carafe. However, the wide range of options available on this unit pushes it right to the top of our list. The most important feature, of course, is the programmable timer, which you can set for brewing coffee at any time of the day. The DCC-2650 also boasts a self-cleaning function, a 1- to 4-cup setting (for those mornings when you really just don’t need 12 cups of coffee) and a programmable auto-shutoff (0-4 hours). You can also adjust the carafe temperature and the brew strength.

To top it all off, this Cuisinart coffee maker comes bundled with a gold tone permanent filter for excellent cost savings (plus it looks cool). You’re likely to find that this Cuisinart coffee maker offers you some of the best features for your money, making it a truly desirable machine.

#2 – Mr. Coffee Programmable Coffee Maker: Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker, Chrome

Although the Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker is not the top product on our list, it does offer a wide range of features for the coffee lover on the go. And at under $30, it is one of the most attractive programmable coffee makers for the price.

Mr. Coffee (don’t ever disrespectfully call him just “Coffee”) also has a water filtration system that removes 97% of chlorine in the water, making for a great-tasting brew. The timer can be set for any time of the day, allowing for a hot carafe to be ready at any time.

And unlike most coffee makers, the Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT has settings for glass and thermal carafes. Although it comes bundled with the glass carafe, you can find and purchase a thermal carafe that is much more programmable. This Mr. Coffee coffee maker allows you to select brew strength as well as grab a cup during the brewing process itself in case you just can’t wait for your fix.

#3 – Cuisinart Brew Central DCC-1200 12 Cup Programmable Coffee Maker (Black/Silver)

The Cuisinart Brew Central DCC-1200 Programmable Coffee Maker (Black/Silver) is sleek and slim with a low profile and all of the features you want and need in a programmable coffee maker. The key feature is the 24-hour advance brewing, which can be set for any time of the day, whether that’s predawn when you wake up or predawn after a night out on the town (we swear it’s not just us!). Just prepare your beans before hand, set the time you want to start brewing (say, right around when you get home from a busy workday) and enjoy that hot cup of joe whenever you want.

The device also includes a charcoal water filter, permanent gold tone filter, zero-t0-4-hour shutoff and a feature for making 1-4 cups. Lastly, there’s a solid carafe temperature knob that keeps the already-prepared coffee hot and ready or at a low-enough temperature that can ensure you won’t burn yourself first thing in the morning—just like Rudy did last New Year’s morning.

#4 – Mr. Coffee DRX5 4-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker, Black

Smaller, simpler devices are what Mr. Coffee is well known for, and the Mr. Coffee DRX5 4-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker Black was made for those who want smaller batches of joe brewed quickly and easily. The extremely lightweight 2.8-lb. device has a 24-hour delayed brew setting…and that’s it. Mr. Coffee DRX5 strips away the features, presenting a product that has one goal in mind: simplifying the coffee-making process and keeping the price point as low as the bar Denise once limboed under on that beach in Hawaii (sorry, the pictures got lost).

The Mr. Coffee DRX5 4-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker also has a pause button for the brewing cycle, allowing you to even grab a quick cup before continuing the percolation process. And with a one-hour shutoff cycle, you can be sure you won’t miss that hot cup first thing in the a.m.

#5 – Cuisinart CHW-12 Coffee Plus 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker with Hot Water System, Black/Stainless

The Cuisinart CHW-12 Coffee Plus 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker with Hot Water System, Black/Stainless is one of the most versatile programmable coffee makers out there. Much like other Cuisinart brewers, the CHW-12 is fully automatic, and offers a 24-hour delayed brew option (we’re still awaiting that 25-hour model), self-cleaning function and the ability to brew one to four cups instead of a full 12.

Much like the Cuisinart DCC-2650, it also has the Brew Pause feature—despite what you’ve heard, this has nothing to do with going cold turkey on coffee—a 12-cup glass carafe and an adjustable carafe temperature control to get it as perfect as your bathwater. And unique to this Cuisinart device is a separate section devoted specifically to hot water, meaning instead of using the normal brew section sans coffee in order to fashion quick hot water, you can actually utilize this separate hot water section of the machine, making it also perfect for hot tea, hot chocolate or dry soups.

Choosing the Best Programmable Coffee Maker

Deciding on the best programmable coffee maker can be a bit of a hassle. There are so many options to choose from, as well as many devices that offer few bells and whistles but that come at a decent price point. So how do you weave your way through this jungle of options? Much like the Predator: with stealth and a bit of forethought (invisibility cloak helps too).

The devices on our list are all different, though there are some very notable similarities. For starters, they all have that one key feature we’ve emphasized in this review: brew delay. The brew delay feature is almost solely found on programmable coffee makers, and you will generally not find it on single-cup brewers. Brew delay is fairly simple: Set the clock on the machine to your desired time. Every coffee maker with timer features has a slightly different way of setting the time, yet they all work on the same principle—just like Nicky’s old VCR that he refuses to part company with. In this case, the coffee maker’s computer sets a timer, turning on the brew functions at the exact time that you have indicated.

Because you must prep your beans beforehand, this may result in a loss of flavor quality for those who prefer freshly ground coffee beans. Several hours of sitting around will have a small impact on the taste of the coffee (or potato chips), although this can be counteracted somewhat by ensuring that your water filters are changed regularly and that you’re using better-quality water as well—i.e., nothing from New Jersey.

The Cuisinart DCC-2650 Brew Central topped our list as the best coffee maker with a timer due to the fact that it is a one-stop shop for all of the best features found among the 5 products on our list. In fact the only device boasting a feature the DCC-2650 does not is the Cuisinart CHW-12 Programmable Coffee Maker with its separate hot water section. You can still use the Cuisinart DCC-2650 to heat up a carafe of hot water, and because it’s a coffee maker with timer functions, it can even do this at any point. The maximum four-hour shutoff function also means you can keep that hot water toasty for a long time, thereby cutting down on the time needed to get hot water for tea or other purposes (we have a caldron out back; just sayin’).

If you’re looking for a smaller programmable coffee maker, the Mr. Coffee DRX5 4-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker is likely going to be your go-to machine. It’s made specifically for those who don’t need a larger machine and for whom extra functions are not of real importance. As far as size and simplicity goes, it’s probably the best programmable coffee maker on our list and it’s truly affordable. It does offer timer functions and you can certainly use it to make hot water, but its main function is coffee, fast and easy.

If you’re in the market for the best coffee maker with timer functions, and you enjoy a feature-rich device, the best programmable coffee maker for you is going to be the Cuisinart DCC-2650 Brew Central. It has everything a feature-loving coffee fanatic is going to want in a device. The other coffee makers on our list have similar features, and are very good devices in their own right, the DCC-2650 Brew Central takes the prize for best in show.
