Cuisinart DCC-2600 Brew Central 14-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Glass Carafe
Sleek, affordable, and sufficiently powerful, the Cuisinart DCC-2600 is a mid-range automatic drip brewer geared towards coffee drinkers with a limited budget. While it doesn’t excel in any particular area, it strikes a balance of convenience, power, and value, offering a fantastic proposition for the average coffee drinker.
Features of the Cuisinart DCC-2600 Brew Central
The most notable of these distinctions is the DCC-2600’s showerhead, which has a direct positive impact on the quality of your brew. Where many generic brewers use thin, single-hole nozzles to spray hot water onto the grinds, Cuisinart’s larger showerhead distributes water over the grinds more evenly, minimizing temperature loss and ensuring a more thorough extraction.
While Cuisinart’s documentation claims that the DCC-2600 brews at a temperature of 190° F, several reports online have refuted this. In reality, the DCC-2600 brews at roughly 170° F, a figure on par with the vast majority of entry-level brewers. Although this isn’t surprising for a $70 brewer, it is disappointing nonetheless.
Another disappointment is brew speed. The Cuisinart DCC-2600 brews at a rate of roughly 1 cup (150 mL) per minute. Although this doesn’t pose much of a problem for smaller batches, waiting for a full batch to brew in the morning can be agonizing. Thankfully, you can set the DCC-2600 to start brewing while you’re still rolling around in bed.
The DCC-2600 offers full programmability (auto on/off), strength control (regular/bold), a heating plate, brew pause, a permanent gold tone coffee filter, and a charcoal water filter. While these features are fairly standard for brewers in its price range, Cuisinart DCC-2600 bolsters superior implementation. For instance, while generic brewers use static temperature hotplates, the DCC-2600 offers temperature adjustment to accommodate a variety of coffee preferences. Its low heat setting is perfect for people who drink their coffee black, whereas the medium and high settings are ideal for those who put milk or cream in their coffee.
Be weary of the DCC-2600’s strength settings, however. Rather than brewing a truly bold cup of coffee, which would require more coffee at a finer grind, the DCC-2600 simply slows down its water flow. While this may result in a bitterer cup, it is an over-extraction that destroys the flavor subtleties of your beans.
Lastly, the DCC-2600 includes an ergonomic, easy-pour, 14-cup carafe. Markings on the side of the container indicate coffee quantity, from 2 to 14 cups. The carafe also features a safety switch atop its lid. When the carafe is in place, coffee flows freely from the filter. When the carafe is removed, the domed lid disengages the safety, and brewing is paused.
AestheticsFeaturing sleek contours, a brushed stainless steel finish, and a black accent trim, the Cuisinart DCC-2600 is a handsome appliance to behold. If you squint your eyes just right, the brewer can resemble a cute, futuristic, coffee-making robot. From the profile and rear, the machine can look almost alien in nature, a technological artifact from some advanced civilization.
There is only so much that can be described in words, and the DCC-2600 has an almost indescribable charm to its design. If we were to pick one word to describe this fascinating effect, we would choose “personality.”
A good use of negative space, interesting geometry, and clear separations of design elements all contribute to the aesthetic appeal of this brewer. Combined with a unique personality, this fascinating design is sure to look great in your kitchen.
Given its price point, the Cuisinart DCC-2600 is a surprisingly sturdy machine. Nearly every inch of its surface is covered in stainless steel, and plastic is used sparingly—limited to the machine’s stylish accents and back panel. Such high-fidelity enclosures are uncommon for drip brewers, and nearly non-existent for brewers under $100.
The DCC-2600’s knobs and buttons are firm and solid, a far cry from the flimsy, wobbly controls found on similarly priced brewers.
Previous iterations of this device, such as the DCC-1200, had countless issues with their water reservoir lids: cheap hinges, flimsy locking, and worst of all, a buildup of condensation that leaked onto countertops. DCC-2600’s build has none of these issues, and while condensation still forms on the inside of the lid, leaking water is directed back into the reservoir, not onto your counter.
Although rare, the main complaint regarding build quality stems from the machine’s safety lock. In some cases, the carafe will leak coffee during a brew cycle, indicating an issue with either the lid or the drip opening.
