Top 10 – Best Drip Coffee Maker
As Technivorm’s biggest competitor in the high-end drip machine segment, Bonavita has released a series of excellent coffee makers for the specialty coffee crowd, undercutting the incumbent significantly. Part of their flagship BV1800 series, the Bonavita BV1800SS performs on par with Technivorm’s priciest offerings. It heats the water just as well, saturates the grinds just as uniformly, and brews even quicker, all at less than half the price.
Features of the Bonavita BV1800SSThe coffee carafe, a central aspect of the coffee drinking experience, is often overlooked or sidelined by coffee drinkers when shopping for a new drip machine. Perhaps, it is the indifference of manufacturers, shadowed by the consumer. Indeed, seldom do drip machine manufacturers endeavor to improve upon standard carafe designs.
For such a fundamental piece of equipment, neglecting the carafe is absurd. A good carafe is the difference between a wet counter and a dry one; a cold cup of coffee and a hot one; a burn hazard and a cool surface.
Understanding the importance of an excellent carafe, Bonavita has introduced entirely separate coffee maker SKUs whose only distinction lies in their carafes. Bonavita’s flagship product line, the BV1800 series of coffee makers, has 3 such SKUS:
• The original BV1800: Includes a high fidelity glass carafe. While the carafe offers no heat retention features, its flared lip design and precision spout minimize dripping, and its knuckle guard prevents unnecessary burns. Read our review here.
• The BV1800TH: Includes a glass-lined vacuum thermos carafe with a stainless steel exterior. Designed to retain heat for hours with minimal impact on coffee flavor.
• The BV1800SS: Includes a dual-walled stainless steel vacuum thermos carafe. This version of the carafe offers the best heat retention.
While the glass-lined carafe is a great choice, its heat retention is significantly poorer than that of the dual-walled stainless steel version. Furthermore, given that many high-end drip machine producers line their water reservoirs with stainless steel, the claim that glass is necessary for optimal flavor is arguable at best.
In short, Bonavita BV1800SS’s stainless steel thermal carafe offers the best value of the bunch, with a standalone replacement carafe fetching upwards of $40 online. Its only downside is a meager 8-cup (1.2 L) capacity. It is a shame that, with a capacity so low, you’re likely to never take full advantage of the carafe’s excellent heat retentive features.
All other technical aspects of the original 1800 remain unchanged on the Bonavita BV1800SS. It sports the same powerful 1400 watt dual coil in its boiler, easily reaching brew temperatures of 205° F. The excellent rounded showerhead makes a return, saturating grinds uniformly and achieving optimal extraction.
Unfortunately, this also means that no new features have been added. The convenience of programmability is sorely missed on the Bonavita BV1800SS.
AestheticsSporting the same retro minimalist design of the original 1800, the Bonavita BV1800S makes a few minor adjustments to the formula.
The most obvious visual distinction comes from the carafe. Replacing the original’s curvy, flared lip glass carafe, the BV1800SS carafe is made from solid stainless steel and accented by black plastic. The new carafe design, reminiscent of a stocky bullet, is more consistent with the stylistic motifs of the machine.
To accommodate for the extra space required by the dual-walled carafe, the BV1800SS has drastically reduced the thickness of its carafe platform, adding a degree of sleekness to the silhouette.
A minor addition has also been made to the water reservoir. In addition to the previously existing cup measurements, markings have been added to measure water volume in mL’s.
Lastly, the original filter basket, a clear plastic cone, has been replaced by an opaque variant. This choice seems purely aesthetic in nature, and is more consistent with the overall color scheme of the Bonavita BV1800SS.
While the individual changes may be minor, taken together they represent a substantial visual overhaul. The black accents are more uniform and purposeful, and the silhouette is slimmer and more flattering. Compared to the original, the Bonavita BV1800SS sports a more premium and solid aesthetic.
On the upside: the Bonavita BV1800SS boasts the same excellent build of its predecessor, with one notable improvement. The included dual-walled stainless steel carafe is infinitely more solid than the glass from the previous iteration.
On the downside: the flimsy lid hinges have not been addressed, plaguing every current version of the brewer.
Overall, the Bonavita BV1800SS is a solid brewer, and is likely to stand up to years of use and abuse.
